Part of the rotator cuff; initiates raising the arm out to the side.

- Initiates abduction (0–15°) and stabilizes the humeral head.
- Ursprung
- Supraspinous fossa of the scapula.
- Ansatz
- Greater tubercle of the humerus (tuberculum majus).
